We created Generation Girl because, to be honest, we were frustrated.
In 2018, it was still way too common to hear that STEM was “too complicated,” “not for girls,” or “not really a priority.” According to the National Labor Force Survey, only around 29% of women in Indonesia had a diploma in STEM-related fields. Even fewer went on to pursue careers in tech or engineering. Part of the problem wasn’t just access, it was visibility. There weren’t enough relatable role models. Girls didn’t see themselves in STEM, so they quietly opted out. We thought, what if we changed that? What if we built a space where girls could learn to code, design, experiment, and lead, all while feeling safe, seen, and supported?
So we started small. Our first program, Winter Club 2018, brought together 40 young girls to learn how to build their first website. It was a pilot, but the energy was unreal. And from that moment on, we knew this had to grow. Today, Generation Girl is a growing community of students, mentors, volunteers, and alumni who are learning and leading in STEM across Indonesia. We run year-round programs, collaborate with educators and companies, and keep creating spaces where girls can explore tech with curiosity and confidence. This began with a simple idea, and it’s evolved into something that keeps surprising us in the best ways ❤️

We’re probably posting memes, STEM tips, behind-the-scenes chaos, or hyping up fellow girlies who just built her first app. Check out our socials so you don't miss any updates from us! ✨
